Misha was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), effectively half of a heart. He had been operated twice previously in April and December of 2014. Still considered inoperable in many developing centers, HLHS is the highest risk diagnosis of all cardiac defects.
At two years and nine months of age, he underwent the final stage of his planned surgical strategy, a Fontan procedure – Stage 3 Norwood operation in Voronezh. Dr. Novick performed all three surgeries.
